A Brief History of the Manghawai Harbour Restoration…

Check out this sign seen at Mangawhai Heads on N.Z.'s North Island. The tone of the text kills me!
You would never see a sign like this in the Yukon. My favourite lines: "1990 -…no help had been granted due to red-tape and bureaucracy." Also: "1991 – 11 February – SECRETLY ORGANIZED by a few local men, the 'BIG DIG' began at 6:00 a.m.

This is a cool little town. It has a great old hotel with a friendly, cozy, real pub. (See photos) Makes you wonder what happened to Yukon's bars. The Pit excepted. But then again, it's condemned.

There is also a great surfing beach here AND a wicked hike over the headlands along a hiking path (tramping trail, they call them here) that's sort of the equivalent of the Trans-Canada Trail.

This would be a GREAT place for a Canadian fleeing winter to spend a Christmas vacation. If you don't mind some beach parties.
