Happy Lunar New Year from Ha Long Bay...

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam...roughly translated to "Bay of the Descending Dragon". The people of the area have a story about a dragon descending during a foreign invasion and spitting out pearls, which then turned in to islands. This helped the locals repel the attackers, acccording to our guide, Hung, whoaccompanied us on an overnight boat trip on Ha Long Bay.
 Hung, our man in Hanoi.

There are thousands of small limestone islands in the bay. There are lots of caves, as well; good for hiding from invaders. There is one huge cave that was used as a stronghold for Vietnamese troops as recently as the Vietnam War. (Or, as they call it here, The Amerian War...I just can't figure that out.)
