Stewart Island, New Zealand...

Super Southland...
We stayed at a place called South Sea Inn, accurately described as "the social centre" of the island. Which is akin to putting Whitehorse in the same socializing league as Vancouver or Bangkok or New York.

The weather outside is frightening. And this is summer. Wind and rain and all sorts of waves and bending giant tropical trees.

Stewart Island is also called Rakiora in Maori. It means "land of glwoing skies", but we figured it means "rainy weather andffried food."

When we got to the South Sea Inn, the lady at the desk was friendly in a brusque sort of way typical of the Stewart Islanders.

"You are in the wing marked rooms 19-21. You're in Room 18." Go figure.

The main settlement on the island (maybe 400 people) is on Oban Bay. And there are lots of people witht he surname "Leask", so Monica tracked some down.

There are Muttonbirds here. The Maori ate them. Still do.

There are lots of birds to see and listen to.
