Stewart Island - just a few hundred people a few million birds and a whole bunch of boats. As mentioned previously, it rained a lot while we were here. But we did do tons of hiking...AND one night when it wan't raining we saw wild kiwi birds - on the beach - at night.
These are a species of kiwi unique to Stewart Island and surrounds. They are big, they eat bugs under logs ont he beach and they also tend to be more active in the day than othr species of kiwi. But we went to spot them on the beach just after nightfall. The wildlife highlight of my trip to New Zealand. They also make blood-chilling calls that, as a German guy we were hiking with, sounded a bit like the screams of a pig being slaughtered. Pretty creepy. The screams, not the German. Actually both, on second thought.
